Watch now: Making America Worth Saving

Washington, D.C.

April 15, 2026

Lincoln Group scholar-members recently presented a program, timed to the 250th anniversary year of the Declaration of Independence, about Abraham Lincoln and his

"empowering reverence" for the Declaration.

Many historians describe Lincoln as the last of the Founders or the son of the Founders. Lincoln himself said that he never had a political thought that did not come from the Declaration and its promise that "all men are created equal" and that everyone is entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

He spoke frequently, and with deep passion about the meaning of the Declaration, and the need for Americans of every generation to keep the founding document's promise alive. In the Lincoln Group program in the video below, six members analyze several speeches that Lincoln made during his political career. The program creates a powerful message of Lincoln's relevance to this year's semiquincentennial celebrations.

Speakers include authors David Kent, Jeff Boutwell and Thomas Horrocks, Howard University history professor emerita Edna Greene Medford, Lincoln scholar John O'Brien and Lincoln Group president Ed Epstein.
