LGDC's own Ed Steers has won a Lincoln Award!

On May 27, longtime member and former president of the Lincoln Group of DC Ed Steers received "The Spirit of Lincoln Award" from the Abraham Lincoln Association based in Springfield, Illinois. ALA presents the award infrequently and "recognizes individuals who have displayed the spirit of Abraham Lincoln in their professional careers for the betterment of humanity." Steers was selected this year by unanimous vote of the ALA Board.

The Lincoln Group knows Ed Steers well. In addition to being a former president in the 1980s, he served many years on the LGDC Board and as its newsletter editor. He has received many awards, including the Lincoln Forum "Richard Nelson Current Award of Achievement." He has written numerous articles and is the author or editor of over 25 books on Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, and a variety of other topics, including World War II. His most famous works are Blood on the Moon: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, The Lincoln Assassination Encyclopedia, and His Name is Still Mudd. Steers regularly appeared on national television programs, including C-SPAN and the History Channel.

Steers is a regular contributor to Lincoln Group of DC programs. On April 5, 2022, he presented a program on his recollections of the history of the Lincoln Group. That program on YouTube can be watched below:

You'll have another chance to catch Ed as he recounts the momentous period of the early 1980s in which he and fellow LGDC colleague Joan Chaconas tracked down some seldom- seen artifacts in the former Smithsonian Institution vault once located in Union Station. Plan to join us for that event to be presented via Zoom on June 17, 2025.

On a personal note, I have always considered Ed Steers a mentor, both because of his extensive knowledge of Abraham Lincoln and the fact that he had a long career as a scientist at the National Institutes of Health before retiring and becoming a Lincoln scholar. Since I was also a longtime scientist prior to switching to Lincoln studies, Ed inspired me to believe that I could do it too.

Congratulations to LGDC's Ed Steers for winning this prestigious award!
