It's been a few weeks since Lincoln250.org and Instagram's A.Lincoln250 launched to spread the word--next year's 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is very much about Abraham Lincoln, who was a fierce advocate of the Declaration's daring proposition that "all men are created equal."

We assume that if you're reading this, you are interested in Lincoln and American history, and that you see the relevance of Lincoln's message that every generation of Americans has to fight anew for equality and to bring about "a new birth of freedom." We think that Lincoln's challenge to us should be a part of the discussion amid the celebrations of the 250th next year.

Can we ask a favor? Please visit the website and Instagram account and check out their content, and like and follow them. Then tell your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and people you know who are interested in history and current events and get them to do the same. Let's spread the word.

Remember Lincoln's words, spoken in Philadelphia on February 22, 1861, as he was en route to Washington for his inauguration as president.

"I have never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments of the Declaration of Independence," Lincoln said.

In saying that, he threw down the gauntlet to those who said that the Declaration's call for equality certainly did not apply to the four million enslaved African Americans. That position Lincoln rejected entirely.

The Lincoln 250 project is the creation of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia and the Abraham Lincoln Association, based in Lincoln's hometown, Springfield, Ill. Our website and Instagram account were designed by students at the Sandage School of Advertising in the University of Illinois College of Media.
