The Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia was thrilled to welcome Lois Romano to our monthly meeting on May 12, 2026. Veteran journalist Lois Romano takes a deep dive into Mary Lincoln’s long, difficult years of widowhood to present a more fully contextualized view in "An Inconvenient Widow: The Torment, Trial and Triumph of Mary Todd Lincoln."
The book is described by its publisher, Simon & Schuster, as a “revelatory new biography of one of the most misunderstood and vilified First Ladies in American history.” Mary Lincoln has been the subject of many biographies, some scornful and others sympathetic. Romano portrays her as a “brilliant and flawed woman” who endured more highs and lows than most of us could imagine.
Lois Romano is a Lincoln Group member and was a longtime reporter, columnist and editor at The Washington Post. She wrote for the Style section and covered national politics. She also taught at American University and at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University. She also worked at Newsweek/Daily Beast and Politico.
