About the Event
Mary Todd Lincoln had a difficult life. She lost three sons during her lifetime and saw her husband assassinated right next to her in Ford’s Theater. Her 17 years of widowhood were exceedingly trying for Mrs. Lincoln – she had to fight to get a widow’s pension, endured an insanity trial brought by her eldest son Robert Todd Lincoln and was committed for a time to an insane asylum, fell into poverty and faced public scorn right up until her death in 1882.
