Where: Maggiano’s, 5333 Wisconsin Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20015

The Lincoln Group of DC is excited to serve as the official launching platform for Lincoln Group President David J. Kent’s new book, Lincoln, The Fire of Genius: How Lincoln’s Commitment to Science and Technology Helped Modernize America. This is a special in-person dinner meeting at Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant in Washington, DC. Zoom access will be offered to interested members who live out of state. Those wishing to partake of happy hour may wish to arrive as early as 5:30 pm to have a drink before dinner. The venue is our usual: Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant in Chevy Chase.

Abraham Lincoln had a lifelong fascination with science and technology, a fascination that would help institutionalize science, win the Civil War, and propel the nation into the modern age. Readers will learn through Lincoln: The Fire of Genius how science and technology gradually infiltrated Lincoln’s remarkable life and influenced his growing desire to improve the condition of all men. The book traces this progression from a simple farm boy to a president who changed the world.

Every in-person attendee will receive a swag bag full of Lincoln Group and Fire of Genius giveaways. There will also be a special raffle giveaway!

Both a career scientist and a published Lincoln historian, David J. Kent will do double duty as Lincoln Group president and the night’s speaker. The presentation will follow the weave of the thread of science and technology through Abraham Lincoln’s life, from the science of farming to his advocacy for technological advancement to becoming the “go-to” western lawyer for patent and technology cases to his tireless efforts to institutionalize science during his presidency. The presentation will touch on Lincoln’s insistence on high-tech weaponry and strategic use of technology during the Civil War. [A full-focused talk on Civil War science and technology will be given in a separate talk to be held September 16th at the Cosmos Club]

Dinner and lecture will be $40 per person. You are able to RSVP for this event here. Please pay in advance by clicking on either the "PrePay Here" or "Join Now" button at the top of this page and selecting the dinner reservation option. If you cannot be there in person, a Zoom access link will be sent to those who select the $10 reservation option, but to experience the full event (and get gifts) you must join us in person. And definitely save room for a great new dessert!

The venue is Maggiano’s Little Italy at 5333 Wisconsin Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20015. The Friendship Heights Metro is directly across the street and there is plenty of parking in the garage next door.
